![]() ![]() and it's quite possible that Daredevil as we know him might no longer exist anyway. ![]() Even though Waid and Samnee's run is slated to end very soon, it's quite possible that they could return. Rebooting the book during its change of setting instead of making it a story arc was part of something that I realized in retrospect after the announcement of “Secret Wars.” Marvel has been preparing readers for the sudden end of many titles all at once through the various NOW! Initiatives. Because Daredevil: Devil at Bay starts with a new #1, it works as a newcomer's introduction to Waid and artist Chris Samnee's ongoing story (although the first volume is absolutely worth reading in its entirety). ![]() As a result, there are some minor spoilers ahead concerning the end of the previous volume. It's a function of owning the third hardcover which collects the back half of the series and which deserves a more thorough exploration. I apologize for skipping from the middle of Mark Waid's Daredevil run to the start of the rebooted title. ![]()

Amphigorey by edward gorey7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Gorey himself was a complicated, reclusive individual whose mission in life was “ to make everybody as uneasy as possible”. That he is not better known elsewhere is perhaps due to the unclassifiable nature of his work – yet his influence can be seen everywhere, from the films of Tim Burton to the novels of Neil Gaiman and Lemony Snicket. ![]() Why The Yellow Submarine is a trippy cult classic The female cartoonists who draw for change His virtuosic illustrations and poetic texts have drawn comparisons to Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear and Samuel Beckett, winning him critical acclaim and a devoted cult following in his native US. Drawing on sources as varied as the novels of Agatha Christie and French silent film, he created a uniquely macabre vision of the world filled with crumbling English mansions, jittery dark-eyed flappers and stony faced Edwardian gents where nothing is quite as it seems. From the Gashlycrumb Tinies to The Doubtful Guest, Edward Gorey’s morbidly funny little books are gothic surrealist masterpieces. ![]()

My Lord Monleigh by Jan Cox Speas7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() Here’s my story: I was working on my PhD in linguistics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. ![]() So, right off the bat, Kleon’s encouragement gave me the gift of taking seriously one of my profound influences and looking into her life. Although I wasn’t born in North Carolina, I have lived most of my adult life in Durham, NC. My comment: Before writing this blog I had zero idea that Jan Cox Speas was from North Carolina, and upon learning this fact I felt an immediate kinship with her. She was survived by her husband and two children. She died of a heart attack in 1971 at the age of 46. She returned to UNC-G for her Master’s in Fine Arts and submitted The Growing Season as her thesis. Near the end of World War II she married John Speas when he returned from his tour of duty in Europe.īetween 19 she published 3 novels: Bride of the McHugh, My Lord Monleigh, and My Love, My Enemy. She studied creative writing at Women’s College, which is now the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Jan Cox was born in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1925. I regularly share What I’m Reading Now, but Kleon has encouraged me to wax poetic about one of my literary heroes: Jan Cox Speas. One of his suggestions is for writers to share their influences. ![]() If you’re a writer or any other kind of artist you might like to take a look at Austin Kleon‘s Show Your Work! which addresses the pleasures and perils of creativity in the age of the Internet. ![]() |
